Interview Set Up
Wednesday , September 7
DO NOW: Find a partner to Interview. Ask questions to get a “telling detail” about that person- not just school, favorite color, etc. Take 5 minutes to interview each other (taking notes). See what details you can get in a five minute interview. Then report back to the class what you found out about each other
Review: Composition, Rule of Thirds. Homework Reminder
Lesson: Interview technique. Asking open ended questions, how to conduct yourself during an interview. Importance of research and preparation, active listening, and asking follow up questions.
It's a CONVERSATION, not an INTERROGATION.
Activity:
Take cameras and set up an interview shot.
Ask three questions-- always start with "tell me your name and how to spell it"!

FRIDAY, September 18
Review: Shot Composition for Interview
- Use Rule of Thirds and have subject look across the camera (if subject is on the right, he/she should be looking to the left)
- Camera at eye level
- Put some depth behind your subject
- Avoid putting windows or lights behind your subject
Review: Interview Technique
- Prepare questions ahead of time but be prepared to go "off script"
- It's a CONVERSATION, not an INTERROGATION (make your subject feel comfortable and ask follow up questions)
- Ask open ended questions
- Maintain eye contact and good body language
- First question: What is your name and how do you spell it?
- Last question: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
TODAYS ACTIVITY: Portrait Project Interviews
Working in groups of 2-3, interview each other about your favorite hobby. Rotate through the following three roles (Everyone must do each role once!):
Interview Subject: Answers questions fully and talks about their favorite hobby on camera, in complete sentences
Interviewer: Do a quick "pre-interview" with the subject to go over what you want to talk about and what the subject's hobby is. Then interview your subject on camera. Remember to ask your subject to keep eye contact with you, and ask open ended / follow up questions to get your subject talking.
Camera Operator: Chooses a location and background for interview, sets up camera and records interview. Each interview must be in a different location!
WRAP UP: If there's time, log on to computers and import all footage into Final Cut Pro. Make sure all tripods, cameras, etc. go back in their bags and back in closet.
